2019 Australian eCommerce Statistics

This month Australia post released some 2019 eCommerce statistics for the Australian market.

Some brief highlights for 2019 are:

  • Total eCommerce revenue $27.5bn (10% of total retail)
  • 73% + of Australian households shopped online during 2018
  • Online purchasing up 20.2% y/y
  • Black Friday/Cyber Monday growth 28% y/y

So all in all 2019 looks like a strong year for Australian eCommerce.

Buy Now Pay Later has been the big story of 2018 and going into 2019 AfterPay is still king with very strong growth and some dominance in the sector

Afterpay is the most popular BNPL provider, recording $2.3 billion
in underlying sales through its platform in the second half of 2018.

The other growth area seems to be sustainability and enviro friendly eCommerce, both in products and services.

Product and brands are growing in this space, as well as providers of eco friendly packaging such as compostable satchels, recycled packing materials and more.

In other news, marketplaces are growing and are still dominated by eBay, although new entrants Catch, Amazon and Kogan are looking to take some market share.
